Congressional delegations from the Great Plains and the Mountain West are slamming their colleagues in the House, claiming that the defeat of the farm bill places farmers cross the country in economic jeopardy.
The recent defeat of the farm bill, after more than a year of false starts and delayed measures, has stunned many farmers and ranchers across the country. Major politician (including John Boehner, whose opposition was key to killing the bill last year) supported the 2013 Bill, which sped through the House and Senate Agriculture Committees.
The bill’s failure still has many agricultural politicians on both sides of the aisle stunned and furious. In Montana, for example, Democratic Senator Max Baucus has called on the House to hold a vote on the Senate version of the farm bill (especially considering that the House has failed to pass their own version for two years).
Republicans from Montana are equally upset. Congressman Steve Daines recently denounced the House vote as “unacceptable.”
Despite this temporary bipartisanship, long-lasting cooperation between Republicans and Democrats seems unlikely in the House. This political brinksmanship could mean another temporary extension of the current farm bill and another year of continued uncertainty for the farm sector.
