Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett recently released a controversial budget that significantly increases funding to the state’s agriculture sector.
Corbett, elected in 2010’s Tea Party wave, is a polarizing figure in Pennsylvania politics. A fiscal conservative, Corbett has dedicated his administration to cutting state spending and balancing the state’s budget.
As a result, Pennsylvania’s recent budgets have significantly cut social spending. Education funding has been slashed and social welfare programs have seen their budgets reduced. In the midst of the recent austerity craze, many farmers had worried that their budgets would be similarly reduced.
Corbett, however, has been committed to strengthening the farm sector. In a recent statement, Corbett defending the farm spending increases. “Agriculture is the state’s leading economic driver with more than $67 billion in economic impact,” said Governor Corbett. “Farming provides jobs for Pennsylvanians and keeps dollars in local communities. This budget is an investment in agriculture, which is the cornerstone of Pennsylvania’s economy and future.”
