Colorado State University Plans for Largest Solar Farm

Colorado State University is planning to add to its solar farm at CSU’s Foothills Campus to create the largest solar farm in the United States.
A private owned company and Xcel Energy have invested money to expand the 2.2 megawatt farm to 5.5 megawatts. The 14-acre establishment will be owned by the private company and the energy will be purchased by Xcel. According to Colorado law by 2020 the energy company must outsource 30 percent of its energy from renewable sources.
The project, which will begin construction in late-December, will surpass Los Angeles’ Southwest College’s solar farm that currently holds the title by at least .5 megawatts.
University officials said the solar farm upgrade will save the university $7 million over a 20 year period. If the cost of carbon continues to increase it could save even more money.
Solar farms are one of the many ways farmers can add to their farms to create extra revenue, and even apply for government subsidies. Contact your local Farm Service Agency for more information on renewable energy.
