While the farm sector has long been a staple of the US economy, agriculture is also offering veterans a unique opportunity to adjust to civilian life (an opportunity that’s important given the massive unemployment problem plaguing veterans) and plan for their future.
Since the 2008 financial crash, agriculture has been one of the few bright spots in an overall sluggish US economy. A vibrant, profitable farm sector has been driving US exports, creating US jobs, and generating significant wealth for farmers.
In addition to offering national benefits, farming has helped US veterans adjust to civilian life and has kept many soldiers out of poverty. Current veteran unemployment rates are hovering around 10 percent, significantly higher than the overall population.
Groups like the Farm Bureau and the Farm Veteran Coalition Partnership have worked to secure federal veteran farming grants, subsidies, offer resources, and information to veterans looking to enter the farm sector. “Through this partnership, I am optimistic returning veterans will learn how to continue their service to our country by helping feed its citizens, nourish its land and make its rural communities more viable through the many entrepreneurial opportunities agriculture has to offer,” said American Farm Bureau Federation President Bob Stallman.
