On May 16 Minnesota Governor Pawlenty signed the veterans finance bill passed by the Minnesota House of Representatives and the Minnesota Senate. The bill allows funding for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s next biennium. This begins July 1. The bill does cut MDA’s budget by seven percent, but it will not make drastic changes to the food safety, animal health and environmental protection services.
The MDA is happy with the new bill. “We are pleased that the Agriculture and Veterans Finance bill is now law,†Minnesota Farm Bureau President Kevin Paap told the Jordan Independent. “This is a very difficult session for the Governor and legislators as they grappled with the state’s budget deficit. Given the current budget situation, Farm Bureau is pleased with the outcome for the Minnesota farmers.â€
