White House Offers Farm Bill Support with Reservations

The Obama Administration recently weighed in on the Senate and House Agriculture Committee’s proposed farm bills by tentatively supporting the Senate version with reservations.
After almost a year of major delays, the 2012/2013 Farm Bill has finally worked its way back to the floor of Congress. Last summer, the Senate and the House Agriculture Committee each passed a version of the farm bill, but both versions were blocked by the GOP leadership in the House of Representatives.
The news that Congress has finally agreed to move forward on a new version of the farm bill is an unexpected dose of good news for many farmers who had lost faith in Congress.
In response to the recently drafted Senate farm bill, the White House has tentatively thrown its weight behind the vital farm legislation. “The administration supports Senate passage of S. 954, the Agriculture Reform, Food, and Jobs Act of 2013, and looks forward to working with the Congress to address… important concerns… prior to final passage,” said an official White House press release.
President Obama, however, is reportedly concerned with deep cuts to the food stamp program and is concerned with reductions in nutritional assistance. The White House’s release emphasized that Obama is hopeful that cuts can be reduced in the upcoming markup and amendment process.
