The Senate farm bill is facing a major hurdle this coming Tuesday as Senators prepare a cloture vote that will determine the fate of the vital farm legislation.
After months of delay last summer, culminating in the abandonment of the 2012 legislation, the farm bill is finally working its way through Congress once again. While House Republicans blocked last year’s bill, this year’s bill faces smoother sailing. House leaders, including Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Speaker of the House John Boehner have already hinted that they will not prevent the bill from reaching the full floor.
In the Senate, however, the bill faces a major hurdle next week. While a majority of Senators currently appears to support the legislation, it faces a cloture vote in the next few days. In order to prevent possible filibuster from recalcitrant Senators, the bill will need to mobilize 60 votes, a tall hurdle in the current partisan climate in Washington.
