Farmers Want Peace of Mind from Farm Bill

After a year of delays and countless lobbying pushes, many American farmers are at the end of their ropes and are desperate for the peace mind that a new farm bill can provide.
Despite months of hard work, the 2012 Farm Bill died in committee after House Republicans refused to allow it onto the floor for a vote. After swift action in the Senate and the House Agriculture Committee this summer, the bill died on the House floor as both Democrats and Republicans crossed party lines to vote against the bill.
While Congress can keep renewing the 2008 Farm Bill as long as it likes, many farmers have expressed concern about the lack of certainty they have regarding federal farm policy.
According to one Missouri farmer, “There’s so much more volatility in ag than there was years ago and so much more cost associated with putting in an acre of corn or beans that we need some certainty in what we’re doing to give us some safety net to help us plan. At the end of the day, we’re just looking at ways we can continue producing enough food in this country in a safe way without getting food from a lot of other countries.”
