While last summer’s soaring temperatures may have dropped, significant parts of the country are still experiencing drought conditions and are still in desperate need of rain.
Last summer saw farmers struggling with some of the worst drought conditions in recent memory. With temperature breaking records across the country, and with rainfall reaching all-time lows, crops withered in the field. The Southwest and the Midwest were hit particularly hard.
With summer just around the corner, many of these regions are still parched and are badly in need of rain. In central Texas, for example, while the temperature is optimal for spring planting, 90 percent of the soil is still too dry to support crops.
While some regions have experienced some minor rainfall, it is not enough to offset the last two years’ worth of dry weather. Without some serious spring showers, many climatologists are predicting another drought this summer, potentially a more serious drought.
If another drought pounds farmers as badly as it did last year, food supplies could be in jeopardy and food prices may go up.
