Recent scientific studies suggest that farm runoff is having an increasingly detrimental effect on the environment, one that could lead to serious consequences for the future of agricultural production.
Farm runoff and agricultural pollution have been increasingly hot button issues in the farm community. Since 2009, the Obama administration has directed the Environmental Protection Agency to be more aggressive about enforcing environmental regulation.
The most prominent sign of this new enforcement is the ongoing Chesapeake Bay project. Citing disastrous damage done to the bay, the EPA has cracked down on the allowable amount of farm runoff into Chesapeake waterways.
The EPA recently announced a massive new scientific study to document the extent of environmental damage caused by farm pollution. This summer, the EPA and the US Geological Survey are sending scientists to 100 streams from Nebraska to Ohio, testing for pesticides, nitrogen pollution, and other chemicals that can hurt wildlife.
