Farm Bureau Praises House and Senate

The President of the American Farm Bureau Federation recently praised the House and Senate Agriculture Committee’s for their willingness to finally take action on the long-delayed farm bill. The successful votes have given many farmers hope that vital farm legislation can be passed before the September expiration of last year’s temporary farm bill extension.
After almost a year of delays, Congress is finally taking action on a new five-year farm bill. For much of that year, farm advocacy groups like the Farm Bureau tried to pressure Congress to pay attention to the needs of the farm community.
The recently passed drafts of the farm bill by both houses has suggested to many farm leaders that Congress is finally willing to put aside partisan bickering in order to protect the agricultural sector.
In a recent statement, Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman praised the recent congressional action, claiming, “The House Agriculture Committee today approved its version of the 2013 Farm Bill. That bill joins the version approved on Tuesday by the Senate Agriculture Committee. This provides a great reason for optimism we will have a new long-term farm bill this year. That belief is further supported by the fact that the bills are more striking in their similarities than in their differences. Both bills provide a solid start for a farm bill that serves America’s farm and ranch families. The emphasis on crop insurance as a risk management tool, combined with flexibility that the measures offer through other safety net choices, will go a long way in ensuring a stable agricultural economy over the next few years.”
