The United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that disaster assistance is available for Baxter and Marion County’s following crop damage due to poor weather conditions.
Throughout 2009 the area found itself victim to excessive moisture following a spring and fall of heavy showers and a cool summer. Rice, upland cotton, soybean and sweet potato producers experienced large damages to crops which ultimately lead to production complications.
Producers affected by excessive moisture can apply for assistance through the Crop Assistance Program at the Baxter and Marion County Farm Service Agency offices. Application deadlines are creeping up on December 10. Loan payments are low-interest based on a case-to-case basis. Damage to crops, machinery and land are all applicable. The money can be used to replace crops, cover revenue loss and production costs.
