North Carolina farmers are reporting the spread of a strawberry virus from plant farms in Nova Scotia, Canada. With agricultural production becoming more global in scope, the prevention of plant-based illnesses has become increasingly important. A group of North Carolina farmers are experiencing firsthand the dangers of the increased international interactions.
Several North Carolina farmers are reporting the spread of a strawberry virus, spread through the importation of infected plants from Nova Scotia. This virus could seriously limit the yields of their harvests come the spring.
“[The plants] are actually growing now,” said one farmer, “but instead of producing one pound, they might produce 60 percent.”
This illness, combined with unusually cold weather, may result in an overall decline in the strawberry harvest by about four percent.
