Farmers Turn to Job Fairs

With immigration reform all but dead in the House, farmers are looking at alternative solutions to chronic labor shortages.
For the past several years, farmers have reported an increasingly shrinking labor market. With tough new immigration laws driving away undocumented workers and with many US citizens unwilling to perform backbreaking farm labor, farmers have reported significant losses due to workplace shortages.
While many farmers had hoped that the recently passed Senate immigration bill might have reversed this labor decline, the refusal of the House of Representatives to consider this legislation has dashed many farmers’ reformist hopes.
Rather than relying on an increasingly unreliable Congress, some farmers are looking to promote job fairs and college recruiting as a solution to labor problems. In an effort to make their industry look more modern, many farmers and farm organizations are organizing college recruitment fairs, hyping their industry’s commitment to innovative technology and emphasizing farming as a reliable career choice in a tough economy.
