With Senators and Representatives on both sides of the aisle postponing a vote on the farm bill in light of a mounting crisis in Syria, farmers are desperately writing letters and visiting town halls, pointing out that they need swift action on a new, five-year farm bill.
For more than two years, the farm bill has been stalled in Congress. While rural and urban politicians both pay lip service to the necessity of new farm legislation, few politicians seems eager to pass a new bill or risk their political capital supporting new farm subsidies.
While Congress has made small progress towards a new bill (both the House and Senate have passed conflicting versions of the farm bill), recent current events seem certain to derail any potential on the farm bill. With an international crisis mounting in Syria, politician’s attention has turned away from domestic issues and towards foreign affairs.
With only a few weeks until the current farm bill extension expires, farmers are hoping to pressure their Senators and Representatives into taking decisive action on farm issues. Without quick action, research programs, energy plants, and farm operations across the country may be shut down.
