Farmers Embrace New Information Technology

While the common image of American agricultural production is one of rustic, backwater growers, the truth is that agricultural producers have been on the forefront of new technological breakthroughs.
Despite the fact that the Green Revolution, a massive increase in agricultural production that was largely the result of new farm technology, took place more than fifty years ago, many Americans have a persistent image of farmers and rural life as being a bucolic throwback to an older era. Last year’s Super Bowl, for example, contained an ad by Dodge celebrating farmers, but also painting their profession as old (playing a 35-year-old Paul Harvey speech in the background).
However, farmers, as they were during the Green Revolution, are still at the forefront of technological innovation. In particular, farmers are experimenting with information technology, using data collection to maximize harvests.
Collecting information about harvest yields, using GPS devices for precision planting, and monitoring weather patterns and fertilizer application using unmanned aerial vehicles, have all proved amazingly beneficial to farmers across the country.
