Farm Bill Negotiation Still in the Works

A joint congressional farm bill committee is still in the works, according to representatives from the House and Senate, although agricultural leaders in both houses seem confident that the conferral committee will meet by next week and that they can hammer together a farm bill agreement within the next month.
For weeks, the 2013 has been stuck in committee. For more than a year, farmers have been without a new federal farm bill (the previously expired 2007 bill was temporarily extended until last September). While this year saw both the House and Senate pass farm bills, both differ so radically over the issue of food stamps that it will be almost impossible for Congress to agree on a single bill.
Despite the enormous burden ahead, the joint conferral committee is planning to meet next week to hammer out differences between the competing bills. “Our number one priority is to pass a strong, long-term farm bill that will provide producers with the market-based safety net they need to deal with volatile markets and weather, while ensuring that the American people continue to enjoy the highest quality, lowest cost food supply in the world,” said North Dakota Senator Hoeven. “A strong farm bill not only benefits every American – consumers and producers.”
